WHY SHOULD YOU BELIEVE THE BIBLE?
2 Timothy 3:10-17
INTRODUCTION: Today’s big question is “Is the Bible true? Why should you believe the Bible is
truly God’s Word? So today we will talk about why you should believe the Word of God is true?
I. WHAT DOES THE BIBLE CLAIM ABOUT ITSELF?
Now just what are the claims of the Bible about itself? First, the Bible claims to be the very
Word of God, not the word of men: 1 Thessalonians 2:13. The apostle Paul was not preaching
the word of man but the very Word of God. Hebrews 4:12-13. This Book, the Bible is unlike any
other book. Most books you read, but this Book, the Bible reads you! Second, the Bible claims
it is inspired by God and not an invention of man: 2 Timothy 3:16-17. Jesus talked about that:
John 3:7-8. Wind, Spirit, and breath—all those come from the same Greek word. Just as God
breathed into man and made Him a living soul, so God breathed into His Word and made it a
living Word from God. 2 Peter 1:19-21. The Bible was not dictated by God; it was inspired by
God. Third; The Bible is the truth of God, not the musings of men. The Bible is not the thoughts
and ideas of men; it is the truth directly from God. John 17:17. Our Lord Jesus believed the Old
Testament. Jesus believed in Adam and Eve. Jesus believed in Noah and Cain and Abel.
II. WHY SHOULD YOU BELIEVE WHAT THE WORD OF GOD CLAIMS?
Here we are right back to our original question: “Why should you believe what the Bible claims
about itself? First, the Bible has proven itself over the years to be unique, reliable, and true! The
Bible has sixty-six books in the one book. Thirty-nine books in the Old Testament and twenty-
seven books in the New Testament. It was written over a period of 1,500 years. It was written by
forty different authors that came from many different walks of life. Some were kings, some were
fishermen, shepherds, prophets, and priest. The Bible was written in three different languages—
Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. The Bible was written on three different continents. Yet the Bible
has a common story line.
III. THE BIBLE IS THE STORY OF SALVATION!
That story line is the message of salvation. The Bible tells us that God created everything,
but man fell into sin. But then man tried to hide from God, but God came seeking mankind. God
has made a way so that men can once again be in right relationship with Him. In the Old
Testament God promised a Savior and in the New Testament God sent the Lord Jesus Christ to
be the Savior of the world. In the Old Testament people got saved by faith and in the New
Testament people get saved by faith. The Bible warns against others giving a different gospel
from the one given in the Word of God: Galatians 1:8-9.
IV. THE BIBLE IS SCIENTIFICALLY ACCURATE AND HISTORICALLY ACCURATE!
When we speak about science disproving the Bible that is science falsely so called: Isaiah
40:22. The science of Isiah’s day said the earth is flat, but the Bible says the earth is a
globe. Science used to say the earth is on the back of an elephant. What did the Bible say: Job
26:7. The Bible says you cannot number the stars, but the scientist of the Old Testament days
said there are 1,023 stars. Jeremiah 33:22. When the Bible speaks of history it is accurate. When
the Bible speaks of prophecy for the future it is always accurate: Isaiah spoke 150 years before
a man named Cyrus was born and told exactly what Cyrus would do: Isaiah 45:1, 4, 13. There are
forty-eight prophecies concerning the coming Messiah. Now for Jesus Christ to fulfill all forty-eight
would be very tough: Micah 5:2 tells us where the Messiah was to be born. Jesus was to be born
of a virgin and He was. The Bible has withstood the tests of both time and scrutiny! For years
and years people have tried to destroy the Bible. Satan hates the Word of God because the Bible
tells us that Satan is a liar and God is the truth! 1 Peter 1:24-25. The Old Testament covers from
“in the beginning all the way to 420 B.C. The New Testament is written in just less than 100
years. Over 500 people saw the risen Christ: 1 Corinthians 15:4-6; Acts 26:26. The Bible is life
changing. One of the greatest testimonies for the truth of the Word of God is the millions of lives
that it has changed. 1 Peter 1:22-23. The seed of the Word of God is imperishable. There is life
in the Bible because it is the very Word of the living God! If you come to the Word of God with an
open heart seeking the truth you will believe the Word of God. The Word of God and the God of
the Word are inseparable. Revelation 19:13; John 1:14. Jesus is the Word of God, and the Bible
is the Word of God; they are connected! Psalm 138:2 KJV. When you seek the truth with all your
heart you will find the Bible is the truth and Jesus Christ is the truth!
