Our Walk With God!

                                                            OUR WALK WITH GOD!

                                                                       John 14:1-6

INTRODUCTION: Our Lord Jesus in our Scripture reading for tonight has made it very clear that He is the

one and only way to come to God the Father: John 14:6. When we receive Jesus Christ as our personal

Lord and Savior, we become sons and daughters of God: John 1:12-13. Our Lord Jesus made it very

clear that we must be born into God’s family: John 3:1-6. Just as our natural birth into this life is not

hopefully the end of this life; so our spiritual birth into God’s family is not the end of our spiritual

life. Knowing Jesus Christ is a lifelong pursuit that the Bible often calls our “walk.”

I. WALKING WITH GOD IN THE OLD TESTAMENT!

Walking with God is not a new concept taught only in the New Testament. From almost the

beginning of time God has looked for people who would walk with Him. Genesis 3:8-9. Adam and Eve

were created in the image of God to have eternal fellowship with God. Genesis 3:9-10. Because of their

sin, God kicked Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden and God did not walk with them again so far as

we know. In fact no one else walked with God again for 682 years. Genesis 5:1-24. Not even Enoch

walked with God until after he had a son. Genesis 5:21-24. Two times in five verses we see Enoch

walking with God. It took another 369 years before God could find another man who would walk with

Him. Enoch’s great grandson Noah is born. Genesis 6:6-10. King David was another man who walked

with God, in fact a man after the Lord’s own heart. David warned us that if we would walk with God there

are those we must not walk with: Psalm 1:1-6. Micah was one of God’s Old Testament prophets and he

tells us how God expects us to walk with Him: Micah 6:8. Amos another Old Testament prophet asks a

question that speaks to walking with God: Amos 3:3. Proverbs 3:3-8 tells us how we may walk with

God.

II. WALKING WITH GOD IN THE NEW TESTAMENT!

In the New Testament the word “walk” describes the kind of ongoing progress we are to be making in

the moral and spiritual areas of our lives by walking in fellowship with our Lord. Now the question is why

would we want to walk with God?

1. WE CHOSE TO WALK WITH OUR LORD FOR COMPANIONSHIP!

When we walk with anyone, we have a great chance for companionship. We are encouraged in

the New Testament not only to walk with our God but to keep in step with our God: Galatians 5:25; Luke

24:13-32.

2. WE CHOSE TO WALK WITH OUR LORD FOR EXERCISE!

Physical exercise is important but there is another kind of exercise that is even more important: 1

Timothy 4:7-8. Physical exercise is good for our bodies in this life. But godly exercise helps us in both

this life and the next. It is by becoming godly, becoming like God that allows us to walk with

God. Matthew 11:12. In order to walk with God you have to be whole hearted: Isaiah 40:28-31.

3. WE CHOSE TO WALK WITH GOD TO MAKE PROGRESS!

Walking also implies making progress in motion. Philippians 1:22-25; 1 Timothy 4:15. We need

to ask ourselves: Am I making forward progress in my walk with God? Am I becoming more like my

Lord? 2 Peter 1:3-11.
