IT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER!
1 John 3:1-3
INTRODUCTION: The title of our message tonight may not seem very theological but it truly is.
John tells us our walk with our Lord Jesus Christ just keeps getting better! 1 John 3:1-3.
Everything this world gives us will either war out or diminish in value or lose its luster or lose it
attractiveness. But the Christian life is something that is good at the beginning and it just keeps
getting better: 1 John 3:1. Being a part of God’s family is nothing but good news! Now not only
are we a child of God right now through faith in Jesus Christ but it gets better: 1 John 3:1-2.
I. OUR POSITION IN CHRIST!
Right now we are sons and daughters of God. 1 John 3:2. We are just as saved today as we
will ever be: Romans 8:17. We have been selected by our God: 1 John 3:1; Romans 5:6, 8. This
love of God is a love that transforms and changes our lives from what we are to what we ought
to be. To be loved by God is truly a wonderful thing: Matthew 8:26-27. Because we are loved
by Christ we have been slighted by the world: 1 John 3:1. We need not feel bad that the world
cannot recognize us as sons and daughters of God. The world did not recognize Jesus either:
John 1:10-13. This world is not our home. The Bible tells us we are pilgrims and strangers on
this earth. We are a group of twice born people in a once born world.
II. OUR POTENTIAL IN CHRIST!
If you are a Christian you’re not what you used to be and you are not yet what you shall be
because the Bible tells us when Jesus comes we will be like Him. 1 John 3:2; 2 Corinthians 5:17.
It will just keep getting better for us. God isn’t just interested in adding years to your life; He
wants to add life to your years. If you will seek God with all your heart Jesus said He came so
you could have the truly abundant life: John 10;10. Our God has a wonderful destiny for all His
blood bought children: Colossians 3:1-4. That simply means that our lives are just going to keep
getting better and better.
III. OUR POTENTIAL ACTUALIZED!
God saved you and He saved me so that we might become just like our Lord Jesus Christ:
1 John 3:2. When God saves us He begins a process of growth in our lives to make us exactly
like Jesus. One day soon I am going to see the Lord Jesus Christ face to face and what does
John say that means: 1 John 3:2; 1 Peter 1:8-9. We will have glorified bodies and minds:
Philippians 3:20-21; Psalm 17:15. If you are not satisfied now just realize the things of this
world can never satisfy us completely but when we see Christ we will be forever satisfied.
IV. OUR PRACTICE IN CHRIST!
In our daily practice as children of God there are two things that we ought to do. First there
needs to be an attitude of hopefulness. Our hope is in the Lord not in the things of this world.
The Word of God tells us this present world is passing away. We as believers in Jesus Christ are
not just looking for the under-taker. We are looking for the upper-taker! Romans 15:13;
John 16:33. We have not only an attitude of hopefulness. Second, we have an attitude of
holiness because we are told: 1 John 3:3. When we really believe that Jesus is coming soon it
leads to a life of holiness: 1 John 3:3. When we really believe Jesus Christ could return to this
earth at any moment we would change the way we live. Hebrews 4:15. Do you have the hope
of 1 John 3:1-3 in your heart today? Can you honestly say: “I know that I am a son or daughter
of God and I have the assurance of my salvation because of my Lord Jesus Christ?
