IS THERE REALLY A GOD?
Hebrews 1:1-9
INTRODUCTION: We are going to answer seven different questions in our series “Life’s Big Questions!” Every few weeks we will hit another of Life’s Big Questions. We will look today at
“Is There Really a God?” Then “Why are We Here?” “Why Should We Believe the Bible?” “True Happiness, Is It Possible?” “Why Could a Loving God Allow So Much Suffering in our World?” “What Lies Beyond the Grave for Me?” Our real question for today could be phrased “Did God create man in the image of God or did man create God in his image? Genesis 1:1. Is God real, does He exist is the most important question. If you get that one wrong everything else comes off that question. The Bible starts with a statement: Genesis 1:1.
I. THE BIBLE NEVER TRIES TO PROBE GOD!
The Bible simply presents God. It never tries to prove God exists. Genesis 1:1. Our God is infinite and mankind is finite. The finite can never prove the infinite. The God we trust in is an eternal God both forward and backward. In the beginning was God: Psalm 90:2. Elohim is one of the Names for our God and it speaks of His creative power. God is so powerful, everything He created He simply spoke it into existence: Psalm 33:6-9. How much power does it take to step into nothing and speak everything into creation?
II. THE BIBLE GIVES EVIDENCE FOR THE EXISTANCE OF GOD!
Although we cannot prove God we can look at the evidence and determine with our rational mind whether there is a God or not. Job 38:4-6. Why do so many scientist teach evolution to our children? Romans 1:18, Romans 1:19-20. In romans 1:19 we see the word “plain.” The word “plain” simply means “apparent or manifest.” God has given us two voices that proclaim that God really exists. The first voice is the voice of creation. God’s existence is clear to us by His creation. Every creation has a Creator: Psalm 19:1-6. The heavens tell us that there is a God. Our body is made up of over 37 trillion cells and every one of those cells is more complicated than New York City’s transit system. Our brains weight about three pounds but have more switches that all the computers on earth. The teleological argument says that our world is very complex and ordered and calls out to us that there must be a Creator God. Genesis 1:1.
III. THE VOICE OF CONSCIENCE!
The second voice that tells us there is a Creator God is the voice of conscience. Romans 1:19. When God created man, He put within mankind the knowledge of God: Ecclesiastes 3:11. Our God has put within each of us the knowledge of eternity, because that which is known about God is evident to each man and woman on this earth. Because God has shown Himself in creation and in our conscience God says we are without excuse. Our God gives two verses in His Word to those people who say they don’t believe in a Creator God and they are exactly the same: Psalm 14:1; Psalm 53:1. The word “fool” here is not talking about someone who is mentally deficient. The word used here is “nabal” which means “the morally wicked person. Those who don’t believe in God are those who reject God are morally wicked. These people don’t have a head problem they have a heart problem, they love their sin: John 3:16-21. Why don’t they want to believe in a Creator God? Because then they will have to give an account to God for their lives. How does God describe Himself: Exodus 34:5-7.
IV. THE BIBLE TELLS US ABOUT JESUS WHO IS GOD IN THE FLESH!
The Word of God tells us about Jesus Christ Who is God in the flesh! How do we know from the Bible that Jesus is our Creator God? Genesis 1:1 compared to John 1:1-3; 14. Jesus Christ is God in the flesh! 1 John 1:1-4. Jesus Christ was a historical person. Many secular historians have written about our Lord Jesus Christ over the centuries. Jesus Christ proved that He is God by His miracles and by His resurrection. 1 Timothy 2:5-7. The word “Elohim” in Genesis 1:1 is a plural noun. That means that our one God Who created everything has more than one Person in the God-head. Genesis 1:26-27. God is speaking, the one God speaking of the Trinity. Our God Who is a Spirit became flesh and took on a body and in Jesus God became a man and put on human flesh. The Scripture says of Jesus Christ: Hebrews 1:1-4. If you really want to know who God is look to Jesus Christ because He is the exact image of God. Jesus Christ loves you and wants you to know and love Him.
