COSTLY MEMORIES

Psalm 33:1-22

INTRODUCTION: I believe that most Christians in this nation have a passion for the United States of America. But I also believe that passion must be renewed in each generation because it is so easy to forget the great price that was paid to make this nation one of the few that has chosen the Lord Jesus Christ as our Lord: Psalm 33:12. We know God wrote this to the nation of Israel but it also applies to any other nation that will chose the Lord Jesus Christ as their Lord. Psalm 9:17: We have seen that played out in every nation that has forgotten God, even the nation of Israel. As we celebrate Memorial Day this weekend we must remember all our men and women that have served in our armed forces and all the wars they have fought in those wars and given their lives for our freedoms.

I. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’S SPIRITUAL HERITAGE

In order to keep renewing our passion for our nation we need to look back at the spiritual heritage of America. Psalm 33:12. We need to remember the people who made America great as they chose the God of the Bible to be their God and raised their children to walk with that same God as well. Although our nation has walked away from our early faith, God never gave up on us. The first Great Awakening happened in the early 1700s with preachers like Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley, and George Whitfield and the Holy Ghost revived our nation. That first Great Awakening was the precursor to the American Revolution.

II. HEROISM IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICAL

We also need to keep in mind the special heroism shown in our nation’s history. We need to remember what the Lord Jesus said about His Own ministry: Luke 4:18-19. As a nation even those nations that have fought us in battle, after they were defeated through the blessings and miracles of the Lord we turned around and rebuilt those nations that had fought against us. As a nation, the United States of America has sent over 600,000 missionaries around the world to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.

III. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’S GREAT SIN

But along with the heroism and faith of the United States of America we dare not forget our great sins. Proverbs 14:34. In our nation’s schools God has been forgotten. In the 1960s the Supreme Court said prayers could no longer be given in the public schools of our nation. The Bible has been rejected in our nation as the primary source of truth. The history taught in our public schools today has been rewritten so that students don’t know the spiritual foundation of our nation. The very foundation of our nation is being destroyed: Psalm 11:3; Judges 17:6; Proverbs 16:25. Many of the clear teachings of Scripture are being ridiculed in our public schools: Romans 1:22-32.

IV. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’S HOPE

What is the singular hope that God gives to a nation that is moving away from the Lord? 2 Chronicles 7:14. We as God’s children must pray for revival and another Great Awakening! We need to stop being politically correct and become morally strong. Christians need to get fired up or the heroes who died to honor God and country will have died in vain. This is our watch for the United States of America and for our God. We need to stand up for the truth and live holy lives so that God can once again bless this land: Psalm 33:12.
