! John 5:6-13
INTRODUCTION: 1 John 5:6-7: Do you remember what the Father said at Jesus’ baptism?
Matthew 3:16-17; I John 5:9. Our heavenly Father wants us to know, not doubt that we are
sons and daughters of God! Our Lord wants us to know that heaven is our eternal home: In
1 John, the word “know” is used forty times in 1 John. In our Scripture reading for tonight, the
word “testimony” is used ten times. There are three proofs given to us in the Word of God so
we may know that we are saved.
I. THE SPIRIT BEARS WITNESS TO THE SON!
First, the Holy Spirit of God bears witness to the Son of God: 1 John 5:6-8. The Spirit of God
comes to us and testifies to Jesus: 1 John 5:6. In fact one of the great works of the Holy Spirit is
to magnify our Lord Jesus Christ: John 16:12-15. The Holy Spirit delights to exalt the Lord Jesus
Christ. Jesus Christ came by water! 1 John 5:6. Why was Jesus our Lord baptized? Jesus
baptism was to show why He came into this world. Jesus baptism showed that He came to die,
be buried and on the third day raise to life. Jesus began His earthly ministry by His baptism.
Both the Father and the Spirit of God were active at the time of Jesus’ baptism. Jesus came by
blood. The beginning of Jesus’ ministry started at His water baptism. Jesus ended His ministry
by shedding His blood. On the cross our Lord Jesus took all our sins on Himself: 1 Peter 2:24-25;
John 19:31-37. The blood of Jesus cleanses us from the penalty of our sin: 2 Corinthians 5:21.
We have a choice, we can pay for our own sins or trust that our Lord Jesus paid for our sins:
Revelation 20:11-15. Our Lord Jesus justified you through the shedding of His blood. Our God
also is interested in your sanctification. When Jesus died the soldier stuck a spear in his side
and water and blood came out. Our Lord Jesus died from a broken heart. Romans 3:21-26.
The water leads to our sanctification: Ephesians 5:25-27.
II. THE HOLY SPIRIT BEARS WITNESS TO MEN!
1 John 5:9: Our God is far more truthful than any man. The Word of God tells us that God
cannot lie but that all men are fully capable and do lie. We live by faith in other people every
day. If we believe in men every day why should we not believe the testimony of our God?
1 John 5:10; Romans 8:15-17. The Holy spirit comes to dwell in our spirit when we receive
Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior.
III. THE WITNESS OF THE SPIRIT IS THROUGH HIS WORD!
The witness of the Spirit is through the Scriptures: 1 John 5:11. So the Holy Spirit of God lets us
know we are saved by the Word of God: 2 Timothy 3:16-17. God has had His Word written
down so we may know and have God’s testimony which He had written down as confirmation
of what we have come to believe that through our faith in Jesus Christ we can know that we
have eternal life. The Word of God tells us that Jesus Christ is the Source of our salvation:
1 John 5:11-12. Just as a marriage license gives proof that a couple is married so when we
receive Jesus Christ as our Savior, the proof is that our names are entered into the Lamb’s Book
of Life. God’s Spirit gives witness to the Son. God’s Spirit give witness in the saints. God’s Spirit
gives witness to us through the Scriptures. God wants you to know that you are saved!
