ARE YOU THIRSTY?
John 7:37-43
INTRODUCTION: Have you ever been really thirsty for a cool drink of water? Not just a little thirsty, but so thirsty you could not think of anything else besides needing a drink of water? Have you ever been thirsty for righteousness? Not just a little thirsty for righteousness but so thirsty for righteousness you could not think of anything else besides your desire to be truly righteous? Matthew 5:6. Why, when we can drink from the well of God’s righteousness that will never run dry are our souls shriveled and dehydrated? God will meet your thirst for righteousness and you seek for Him with all your heart: Jeremiah 29:11-13; Psalm 42:1-2; Psalm 143:6; John 7:37. In John chapter seven, Jesus is speaking in Jerusalem at the Feast of Tabernacles: John 7:1-5. At the Feast of Tabernacles the high priest would take a golden pitcher, dip it into the Pool of Siloam and carry it back to the Temple. There he would pour that water out on the altar of sacrifice and the great crowd would cry out the words of Isaiah 12:3. At that very moment Jesus shouted: John 7:37. We must be very careful that our religion lacks true relationship: Jeremiah 2:13; John 7:37.
I. TO GAIN A TRUE SPIRITUAL THIRST, WE MUST SEEK GOD’S WATER!
Before we can have a true relationship with our heavenly Father we must have a true thirst for our God: Psalm 42:1-2; Psalm 63:1; Psalm 143:6. We are to be the one that makes our family thirst for God: Matthew 5:13. Our friends and family will see the light when we are that light: Matthew 5:14-16. You are to be the fruit that others can eat as they find the fruit of the Spirit evident in your life: Galatians 5:22-25. Our lives can make others thirsty for God and help them become salt and light in the lives of others. Matthew 5:6.
II. TO QUENCH A SPIRITUAL THIRST, WE MUST DRAW FROM GOD’S WELL OF WATER!
Once a person becomes thirsty for God, Jesus said: John 7:37; John 4:1-13. Here Jesus is inviting this woman to allow Him to be the seventh man in her life. Jesus was offering Himself as her first and only perfect relationship in her life. John 14:6; John 4:13-14. King Solomon tried to quench his thirst in many different ways instead of turning to God. Here is his conclusion: Ecclesiastes 2:1-11; Ecclesiastes 12:13. A living relationship with God is the only source and secret of satisfaction in this life. The way to true holiness is Jesus our Lord!
III. TO GAIN A SPIRITUAL THIRST, WE MUST FIRST MAKE A DECISION!
If you gain a spiritual thirst and really want to quench it you must come to our Lord Jesus Christ: John 7:37-39. When we come to Jesus as the living water we will not only be able to quench our own thirst but will become a source of that living water too others as well. John 7:37. This is not just a New Testament promise. It is also found in the Old Testament: Isaiah 55:1-3; Isaiah 58:11. Are you thirsty? Are you thirsty for God? Are you tired of living the Christian life without the peace and joy of the Lord filling your heart? Then come to Jesus and finally have your thirst completely quenched! John 7:37.
